Cia Siab in Wisconsin

About

This special collection consists of curriculum and artifacts that can be used by educators, workshop organizers, and community members who are interested in learning about the HMoob (Hmong/Mong) community in Wisconsin.

The curriculum is tied to an exhibit that traveled to cities in Wisconsin with the highest HMoob populations: Eau Claire, Fox Valley, Madison, Milwaukee, La Crosse, and Wausau. This exhibit uses the HMoob words “cia siab” (jia-shia [ciaʂia]) for hope and “HMoob” the indigenous spelling of HMoob that includes both the green and white HMoob dialect. It opens its doors to audience members both familiar and unfamiliar with the HMoob and even less familiar with America’s Secret War in Laos (1964-1973). This exhibit welcomes audience members to engage in conversations about war, historical trauma, the battlefields of memory, resilience, and healing.

For those who passed away while waiting for resettlement in another country, families had to present their certificates alongside their family forms that list their names. This family form is essential to approving the refugee resettlement process.
